GKIDS has released the first official teaser for the highly anticipated Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron, along with a release date for audiences in North America ahead of the film’s international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week.

The Boy and The Heron, a loose adaptation of the novel ‘How Do You Live’ marks Hayao Miyazaki’s first film in a decade since the release of  The Wind Rises in 2013, and is one of the most expensive films produced in Japan according to Producer Toshio Suzuki. The film was released domestically in July and received mostly positive reception. The film has also performed well at the Japanese box office despite its near-non-existent marketing, relying largely on word of mouth and namesake to bring audiences to theaters while also allowing audiences to go in without expectations for the film.

For American fans of Studio Ghibli and Director Hayao Miyazaki, the wait is almost over before Miyazaki’s latest (supposedly final) film reaches international audiences, as The Boy and the Heron makes its North America debut in theaters and IMAX on December 8th of this year. If the visuals on display in this teaser are any indication, viewers can expect plenty of surreal imagery and stellar animation as has come to be expected from Studio Ghibli.
