The Avatar: The Last Airbender panel at San Diego Comic-Con today announced that the new movie from the studio created by Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be focused on adult Team Avatar. The adult versions of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki, and Zuko, alluded to and sometimes glimpsed during flashbacks and pictures in The Legend of Korra, will finally get their own movie.

This of course changes the timetable and release schedule of the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movies slated for release in the coming years. It was originally reported that the first movie was going to be focused on Avatar Kyoshi, followed by a movie centered on Zuko as Fire Lord, and finally a feature-length movie on Korra. This particular news does not negate the plans for those movies, however.

The last fans saw anything of the Gaang in film format was when the first show ended. There has been a slew of comic books written since then expanding on the adventures of the kids that fans fell in love with. The flashbacks and visions of the past in The Legend of Korra would show them as young adults trying to guide the world after the Hundred Year War that Aang and the others brought to an end. The only surviving member of the group was Katara, still living at the South Pole as a healer and teacher.

As the books go on to explore, after the Hundred Year War, Aang and the others set to trying to right the wrongs of the Fire Nation over the past 100 years. Working with newly coronated Fire Lord Zuko, Aang ultimately devises a plan to stabilize the Fire Nation colonies of the Earth Kingdom by consolidating them into a new nation, the United Republic of Nations. As we learned in The Legend of Korra show, this republic quickly developed and modernized. The nation was initially governed by a council of representatives of the four bender nations, but as events developed in series, this council would cede control to an elected president similar to the United States. The creation of this republic factors heavily into the comic books that take place after the end of the first show. It is possible this new movie will have something to do with this storyline.

Netflix is also developing a live-action ATLA show. Originally DiMartino and Konietzko were on hand to help, but they left over creative differences. It was then revealed that they have developed their own studio to focus on more ATLA stories, and have signed on with their original home of Nickelodeon.
