With the theatrical release of Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ now only a month away, GKIDS has released a trailer for the English Dub of the film, giving audiences another visually stunning glimpse at the film, and our first taste of the vocal work from the film’s ensemble cast, including Robert Pattinson’s “Grey Heron”.

As Robert Pattinson’s first venture into voice acting, and the second Batman actor to star in a Ghibli film, his performance is strikingly distinct, as his performance as Grey Heron is unrecognizable, which is a testament to Pattinson’s ability to voice act, taking on a different voice to fit the character. Alongside Pattinson, we got our first taste of Luca Padovan as Mahito, Karen Fukuhara as Lady Himi, Dave Bautista as the Parakeet King, Christian Bale as Shoichi, and Florence Pugh as Kiriko.

The Boy and the Heron is a semi-autobiographical fantasy based on the Genzaburo Yoshino novel “How Do You Live?”  Set during the Pacific War, the film follows twelve-year-old Mahito, who encounters a mysterious world shared by both the living and the dead after the death of his mother, with a mysterious heron capable of traveling between these worlds. The film was written and directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, and produced by Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with the score composed by longtime collaborator Joe Hisaishi, and its theme song “Spinning Glove” was written and performed by Kenshi Yonezu, known for the Chainsaw Man theme “Kick Back,” which is now the first-ever Japanese song to receive an RIAA-Certified Gold Record.

The Boy and the Heron releases in theaters and IMAX nationwide on December 8th.
