While Dune: Part Two has surpassed more than $600 million in its global run, it’s been speculated for some time whether there would be a third movie as Denis Villeneuve has expressed a desire to do. During the early days of the second film’s launch, it was revealed that he was working on the script for the third movie, should it be greenlit.

It looks like that is now a reality. According to a confirmation from Variety, due to the second movie’s success, Legendary Pictures is working with Villeneuve on developing the third movie. This would be the final Dune movie for Denis Villeneuve, as he has stated he would not pursue any further Dune movies if it were to be made.

Dune: Part Three presents a particular challenge for adaptation. It has been adapted before, through the use of a television mini-series back in the early 2000s on the Sci-fi Channel. It adapted the second book, Dune: Messiah, and its sequel Children of Dune. The series took the name of the third book, and it looks like Villeneuve wants to adapt Messiah to serve as the third movie in his trilogy. It’s a far more complicated plot than the first book. There are characters and factions within the book that are vaguely referenced in the movies.

If you want to avoid spoilers, stop reading here.

There’s also the complication of Denis’ alternative ending for Dune: Part Two. In the original book. Chani is one of Paul’s most devout followers. In the end, Chani doesn’t leave his side after the duel. That ending doesn’t exist in Villeneuve’s version. Instead, Chani has a small following of anti-imperialists who resist the colonizer's influence spreading through the Fremen. At the end of the movie, when Paul kills Feyd, she leaves and rides off into the desert.

This complicates things because Chani is supposed to bear Paul’s children. It’s a significant part of the plot, so it will be interesting to see how Villeneuve works this, given how the second movie ended.

There’s no word on when this will even be released, but fans should rejoice that Villeneuve will be able to finish his saga.
