The Devs Discuss The Upcoming 'Star Wars' Strategy Game
Last week, the developers of a still-undisclosed new Star Wars game were interviewed regarding their most recent work. From Bit Reactor, technical director Ryan McFall and art director Daanish Syed share their thought on the upcoming Star Wars strategy game.
Both developers disclosed they were not authorized to give details of the game just yet, but they were happy to give their thoughts on their work and how they are approaching this new game.

Their main concern was the familiarity and simplicity of the game. Both developers have their respective experience with different game genres: McFall previously worked in Firaxis’ XCOM reboot and the FEAR game series; while Syed worked on Mortal Kombat and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While they have experience in action-based games, the challenge for a strategy game is completely different.
Syed talked about the challenge of designing a friendly and impressive interface: "When a player is brought into the game, they're learning all the systems and so we want it to be immediately fun and give the player maximum output for their minimum input and find the fun in the core game itself.”
Ryan McFall said: "I think there's definitely a perception there—I think folks have a limited view of what a strategy game could be. That is one of the things we want to try to do: expand people's perception of what the experience actually is of playing a strategy game."
Finally, Syed commented on how he plans on developing a unique system that also feels native to the Star Wars universe: "That's the language (the celestial star charts) we developed for Jedi: Survivor. Similarly, we're gonna develop our own language that fits within Star Wars, but also feels unique to this game."
Based on their statements it is hard to guess the direction they will be taking for the game, as they provided practically zero details. But it poses the question of whether this will be a Real Time Strategy game or not, as the developers insisted on simply calling it a “strategy game”.
There is still no confirmed date for the game release. We hope to find more details as development advances.
