Shadow is quite the popular character amongst the Sonic fanbase, almost more popular than the blue blur himself. His popularity is so immense that Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka has been asked whether or not the ultimate lifeform will be making an appearance in the upcoming classic-themed title, Sonic Superstars. Naturally, Iizuka shot down the claim that the character who first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 on the SEGA Dreamcast would be making an appearance in a title inspired by the classic 16-bit titles on the SEGA Genesis.

He did confirm, however, that Sonic Team does have plans to feature him in a new Sonic title. Whether or not this would be a spin-off featuring him, such as in the 2005 title Shadow the Hedgehog, or if he was merely going to be a playable character or part of the story has yet to be confirmed. Iizuka encouraged fans to wait for the upcoming third film in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series to see him in action.

In the same interview, Iizuka stated that the plan is to develop modern 3D titles and classic 2D titles alongside each other. He also stated that the team is focusing on the main game at this time before thinking about any potential DLC for the game. Sonic Superstars speeds onto all major platforms this fall.
