Taika Waititi's 'Star Wars' Project May Be Closer Than He Claims, Reports Say Filming Will Start Early 2023

Sources close to Disney say that Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars movie may premiere in theatres sooner than expected.

Kathleen Kennedy recently said that the movie is now looking at a December 2023 release with filming due to happen at the beginning of that year. That’s a full two years ahead of the previous schedule. It’s a tight timetable for production, but after the popularity of The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the studio may want to capitalize on the momentum and have gains at the box office as well as on the small screen.

We know very little about this project, but knowing the New Zealander’s previous work (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Love & Thunder, What We Do In The Shadows) expect a mix of zany humor and action. Taiki refuses to let slip the period the movie will be set in or any of the cast. But a story is currently circulating concerning an incident while he was working on Thor: Love And Thunder. Taiki reportedly ‘forgot’ Natalie Portman was in Star Wars and asked her ‘what she wanted to do next’, in reference to a part in the new Star Wars film. If the quote isn’t a red herring; then it’s safe to say he isn’t working on a clone wars era movie!

It also wouldn’t be unexpected for the film to be based on a Marvel-esque phase format tied into the series we know are also on the way (Andor, The High Republic, Ahsoka). So, it might be a stand-alone project rather than the first in a trilogy, as per the previous Star Wars movies.
