Taika Waititi Says That His 'Star Wars' Movie Will Trick Audiences

Lucasfilm and Disney announced last year that Oscar winner Taika Waititi would be directing an untitled Star Wars film. The announcement came around the time that it was announced that the Star Wars universe would be expanding into the different corners of the universe through more movies/shows/stories. As of yet, we still don’t know what story Taika Waititi has been signed on to direct, but whatever it is, it is highly anticipated just because anything that Waititi touches, fans tend to love.

Taika Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok, where he made the story and the characters more comedic. It has been argued that it is the best Thor movie to date. The comedic elements he added to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor carried over into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Taika Waititi is back again for a movie in the Thor franchise, directing upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder movie.

Taika Waititi was brought to the Star Wars galaxy as one of the many directors for The Mandalorian. He also provided the voice of IG-11 in the first season of The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm eventually brought him in to direct the new untitled Star Wars film that will come out sometime after Patty Jenkins' 2023 film Rogue Squadron.

Unfortunately, we really have next to nothing when it comes to details about Waititi’s Star Wars film. It was reported that the movie filmed/will film scenes in Scotland. However, Waititi has said that his crew was in the writing stage when they were reported to be filming there. At some points in the last few months, Waititi said that he was uncertain as to when he will get to focus on the film more concretely.

However, recently, Taika Waititi sat down with Wired UK and seems to have given an update about his upcoming Star Wars film. Waititi jokingly said that the script is “still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage.” This wording is used by scriptwriters when setting a scene in a script. However, Waititi did get more serious and reveal that there is, in fact, a story.

“But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me. I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films.”

Waititi also added, teasing, that the script is going to be an unexpected adventure that fools the audience “into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!'” Which we know leads to the best kinds of stories. And with what we know of Waititi’s movies, it is sure to definitely be an adventure we don’t expect and can’t predict.

The Star Wars movies have exclusively been within the timeline of the Skywalker Saga, which means that there is a lot of room for creativity and expansion. The Disney+ shows are seriously underway with their own stories, and we have no idea if the movies will tie in at all.

Finally, having some comments by Taika Waititi about the Star Wars movie after scarce updates is exciting, even though it still isn’t much to go on. We now know that the movie has a story, most likely most, if not all, of a finished script. It will be very exciting to see where this story will take place among all the other Star Wars series and whether it will tie in or use characters from other current or past projects. No one knows what to expect, and this makes for an exciting film release. The Star Wars universe is huge. So many stories with so many characters have been written and filmed.

As of yet, nothing has been confirmed or rumored at all in regards to characters, cast, film locations (minus the mention of Scotland), etc. This makes the intrigue all the more exciting.

Taika Waititi likes to tell stories that are unique, usually humorous, and with many twists and turns that audiences don’t expect. It is safe to say that whatever storyline Waititi’s Star Wars film will follow, it will definitely have his stamp on it.
