With Legendary Entertainment, Bandai Namco Filmworks, and director Jim Mickle pushing forward on their live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie, we’re finally getting word about casting for the film, with an unexpected choice in the forefront.

First revealed by Variety, actress Sydney Sweeney is in final talks to star in the film. Sweeney is best known for her roles as Cassie Howard on the HBO series Euphoria and Eden Spencer from the critically acclaimed Hulu series A Handmaid’s Tale

While her role in the Gundam film has not yet been announced, this announcement has caught the attention of Gundam fans from all eras, with some even speculating that Sweeney is being cast as Sayla Mass, one of the lead characters from the original 1979 anime. This would allow Bandai and Legendary to explore the events of the ‘One Year War’ from her perspective rather than of original protagonist Amuro Ray, or even explore her life after, since she is notably absent from Gundam media outside of the original series, being absent from future storylines despite her major connection to series antagonist Char Aznable.

While this is entirely speculatory, there’s no denying that Sweeney’s potential casting as the lead for the Mobile Suit Gundam movie is an unexpected and potentially welcome surprise for fans of the 46-year-old franchise.
