On July 24, The CW released a trailer for the fourth and final season of Superman and Lois, which will adapt the Death of Superman story arc, published between December 1992 and October 1993.

The show's end after the upcoming final ten episodes isn't a big surprise. Back in May 2023, Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, stated that the business model for the show was no longer feasible for the network and that the fourth season would have to cut down on regular cast members and writers, as well as on action scenes. The last nail in the coffin was probably the creation of the new DC Universe by James Gunn and Peter Safran, with an upcoming new Superman film written and directed by Gunn.

Judging from the trailer, it seems that the Man of Steel (played by Tyler Hoechlin) will meet his fate early on in the season, leaving his wife Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and their two sons Jordan and Jonathan behind, with the former seemingly trying to carry on the work of his father.

Michael Cudlitz, who has appeared in 2 episodes of season three, will reprise his role as Lex Luther, the main antagonist of the Kent family, but the trailer also includes Doomsday. His presence would be a deviation from the story of the comics, where Superman kills the monster before falling victim to his injuries.

A presumably even longer trailer for the season will be shown this weekend at SDCC. Still, even before that, Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher, co-producers and showrunners for Superman and Lois, extended their gratitude to everyone who has worked on the show:

“While we’re sad to say goodbye to Superman & Lois at the end of season four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created — on and off screen. We’re thrilled about what we have in store in our final season, and can’t wait for everyone to watch as Superman, Lois, and all our heroes face off against the biggest threat in the show’s history — Lex Luthor."

The fourth season of Superman and Lois will premiere on October 17, with a special feature-length premiere.
