Although some people might think that acting in a film and/or television series is nothing other than just a job for the actors and actresses starring in them, some actors and actresses consider their performances life-altering in some ways. Such is the case with the young star of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Kyriana Kratter. Kratter, whose character “KB” has not only given voice to some of the challenges faced by people with disabilities but also helped her find her voice in the process of starring in the latest Star Wars series, specifically in the sixth episode of the series, Zero Friends.

In Zero Friends, the four children lost in space in the galaxy far, far away—Fern, KB, Wim, and Neel—are stranded on a planet trying to get back to their ship after being betrayed and abandoned by their adult companion, Jod, in the previous episode. The conflict that had been brewing quietly between the four children since the beginning of the series because of the dangerous situations they regularly found themselves in finally came to a boil. After a heated argument, the friends temporarily split up to find a way to get back to their ship, with Wim and KB going off in one direction and Fern and Neel attempting to scale a cliff to make it back to their ship.

During their time apart, Wim has to repair KB, who has cybernetic implants that need critical maintenance. Wim restores KB to functional status and this leads KB to voice feelings to Wim about her disability caused by an accident sometime before the start of her series.

“Part of KB likes that Fern treats her like an equal, but, in reality, KB is different. And that’s okay. But it gets to a point where Fern treats her so normally that she puts KB’s life in danger, and that’s really why KB was angry at Fern,” Kratter says.

That iconic scene from the episode also helped Kratter build her confidence by asserting herself while filming that scene as well.

“KB was learning how to speak up in episode six, and I was also learning how to speak up when I was on set. My whole life, people have said, ‘Talk louder, speak up,’” Kratter tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I love doing different takes, but sometimes, it was scary to ask for one on such a big set. But I did end up asking [Howard]. I wanted to try a version that was just a little bit more angry. And Bryce was just like, ‘Yeah, go for it!’ So that was really amazing because it built up my confidence.”

In addition to giving voice to people with disabilities, Kratter’s character, KB, also has the notable distinction of having two moms, adding to the representation present in the latest Star Wars series. The well-regarded series, influenced heavily by The Goonies (1985), Stranger Things (2016-2025), and pirate lore in general, is currently exclusively streaming on D+. The series finale of Skeleton Crew is set to air on the platform next week on January 14.
