When it was released nearly a year ago, no one could have seen the immense success that Helldivers 2 has achieved. In its first three months, it sold 12 million units. This made it the fastest-selling Playstation Studios game in Playstation history.

It has seen some bumps, with bumpy updates and questionable decisions from the development leads, but it is regaining popularity after it was announced at the Game Awards that the Illuminate, an old enemy that has been known to be coming for some time because of leaks, are now in the game.

With all that success, it’s really of no surprise that with the successful game adaptations we’ve seen in Hollywood of late, Sony just announced at CES in Las Vegas that Helldivers 2 is being adapted for the silver screen.

No details about the movie were given, except that it is a coordination between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures. If you’ve played the game, you’ll know that the satire of fascism is pretty blatant and over-the-top, and it would be a huge miss for the film to not do the same thing. While the game is inspired by Starship Troopers, humanity is fighting a three-front war in the game against the Terminids, the Automatons, and now the Illuminate. All to spread “managed” democracy.

There is no release date to speak of, but it’s likely several years out at this point.
