Actress Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Raya and the Last Dragon) recently made headlines when she publicly disclosed that she is queer. The disclosure came during an Entertainment Weekly interview about the release of Ang Lee’s upcoming queer romantic comedy film, The Wedding Banquet (2025), starring Tran. Tran expressed that she was excited about publicly portraying a queer person such as herself and noted that she has received lots of support and acceptance since coming out as queer.

"I haven't said this publicly yet, but I'm a queer person," Tran said.

"The thing that really excited me about it was I got to play a person that I felt like I knew," Tran said about starring in The Wedding Banquet, by queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn (Fire Island). "I don't feel like I'm acting at all in this movie."

"I'm here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people," she continued. "I've never been in a queer space before. I've truly never felt this accepted."

The film is an update on Ang Lee’s 1993 film, of the same name. However, instead of featuring a gay male as in the original, the remake features a lesbian woman, Angela, played by Tran, who enters into a fake straight marriage of convenience so that her male friend, Min, can obtain a green card, and she can raise money for IVF to have a child with her girlfriend (Lily Gladstone). The film also stars Bowen Yang and is slated for theatrical release sometime in 2025.
