'Star Trek' Teasers From San Diego Comic-Con
The San Diego Comic-Con Star Trek panel was packed with stars who delighted in sharing the newest revelations about forthcoming projects and collaborations. Be sure to check out our post about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds updates as well!
Star Trek: Section 31 will star Michelle Yeoh continuing her role as Star Trek: Discovery’s Philippa Georgiou. Director Olatunde Osunsanmi has described the movie as a “messy version of the Star Trek universe -- a beautiful mess.” Other principal cast members who have been announced for Section 31 include Omari Harwick (Power), James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Kacey Rohl (The Magicians), and Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso). Section 31 has gone through several changes since it was first confirmed in 2019, but it should be released in early 2025.

The next Star Trek series to come to fruition, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, will begin production this August. Starfleet Academy will tie into other shows by including characters Jett Reno from Discovery (played by Tig Notaro) and The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Prodigy (played by Robert Picardo). Oded Fehr’s Admiral Vance and Mary Wiseman’s Sylvia Tilly, both from Discovery, will have guest appearances. Previously announced were cast members Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, and Gina Yashere. We also know that there will be a character using a wheelchair and deaf representation in the show.
Additionally, another Star Trek series was revealed to be in the works. The action comedy will focus on “Federation Outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.” Alex Kurtzman, Tawny Newsome (Star Trek: Lower Decks), and Justin Simien (The Haunted Mansion) will write and executive produce the live-action show. Other executive producers include Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.
In the upcoming final season of the adult animated series Lower Decks, there have been talks of amazing legacy guest stars, but it also seems that there might be some things missing. Kurtzman commented that viewers should “Watch it twice because actually it does register. It will matter. Look what you did for Prodigy - do it again.” This implies that Star Trek fans should protest its finale because the showrunners are not done with these characters and their lives aboard the Cerritos.
Finally, one of the sweetest little announcements was for a collaboration between Star Trek and Doctor Who. While not quite a crossover, the two franchise empires have started Intergalactic Friendship Day. July 30, previously known as International Friendship Day, will now be interstellar “with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.” The showrunners for both conglomerates agree that they’d love to see a crossover episode or something similar in the far-off future. In the meantime, on August 1, mobile games Star Trek: Lower Decks Mobile and Doctor Who: Lost in Time will share the same adventure as “experienced from two unique perspectives, when a mysterious space-time ripple…throws the Doctor onboard Star Trek: Lower Decks’ U.S.S. Cerritos.”
The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will debut on Paramount+ on October 24, 2024.
