After five years of waiting, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse debuted worldwide for audiences in theatres. The film’s earnings are projected on its opening weekend $150 million; $60 million coming from overseas markets such as China, Belgium, and France, with $80 to $90 million domestically. The film is the sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which earned $35.3 million on the initial weekend and closed its run at $190.2 million. The Spidey sequel opens in the Japanese market on June 16 and then in South Korea on June 21.

Sony Pictures is not forecasting much competition against the somewhat cult following for the Miles Morales Spider-Man story; however Disney had a significant opening weekend over the Memorial Day holiday with their film The Little Mermaid, which earned $117.5 million. Sony Pictures does not foresee overtaking the ocean’s princess on its second weekend. However, Disney and 20th Century Studio are looking to earn a market share from consumers not enticed by the New York City web-slinger with the release of the horror film Boogeyman, an adaptation of a Stephen King short story sharing the same name.
