After much speculation and anticipation, the trailer for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film has finally been dropped. The trailer, much like the film, features Shadow prominently. It opens with a heart-to-heart between Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and his adoptive father, Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden), before transitioning to Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves) escaping from a G.U.N. facility. G.U.N. calls on “Team Sonic” to help defeat and capture Shadow. Shadow is said to have a similar background to Sonic. However, the commander tells Sonic that where he “found family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss.” This is accompanied by two shots of Maria Robotnik (played by Alyla Browne): one with her looking in Shadow’s tube, and one with her lying on the ground, presumed dead after an explosion, with Shadow and Professor Gerald Robotnik (played by Jim Carey) by her side.

The trailer features Sonic, Tails (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) as they first encounter Shadow. Various action shots fill the trailer, including one of Shadow kicking a soldier in a manner reminiscent of the intro to the 2005 title, Shadow the Hedgehog, and him performing the famous Akira slide. The trailer also shows Team Sonic teaming up with Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carey), who initially appears similar to fat Thor from Avengers: Endgame. Within the trailer are several easter eggs to the Sonic video games, including what appears to be an animatronic band featuring the A-Life Chao creatures first featured in the 1998 Dreamcast game Sonic Adventure. The trailer ends with Robotnik meeting Professor Gerald Robotnik, though how this is actually possible has yet to be confirmed.

The build-up to the trailer’s premiere was short yet massive. Though leaks and unconfirmed dates were rampant, when it finally came to promote the trailer, Paramount did so in a big way. Light projections promoting the trailer were found in Tokyo, San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Frankfurt, Seattle, Dallas, Los Angeles, London, and Sydney between August 25th and 26th. Fan reaction to the trailer itself has been mostly positive, with many praising the way that Sonic Adventure 2’s story is being adapted into the Sonic Cinematic Universe and how Shadow’s character is portrayed. Keanu Reeves’ performance as Shadow has also been received positively. Some fans, however, are lamenting the seeming exclusion of Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat from the film, and others are also skeptical of Professor Gerald Robotnik’s inclusion in the present-day story rather than just being relegated to flashbacks, particularly how he appears to be more comedic than in previous interpretations. Regardless, Sonic fans are still hyped for the film, which speeds into theaters on December 20th of this year.
