'Sonic 3' Scores Early Lead In Box Office Race Against 'Mufasa: The Lion King'
This weekend saw the release of two cinematic heavy hitters as Disney and Paramount Pictures released movies on the same day. At the domestic box office, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King has fallen behind Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. And though it might seem like Mufasa has taken the worldwide box office by storm, there’s a reason for why that is.
On the domestic market, Mufasa: The Lion King opened to $35.4 million, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened to $60.1 million. The bulk of Mufasa’s opening box office comes from the worldwide market, with the global total standing at $122.2 million. Meanwhile, Paramount has not reported any international takings for the box office. Despite releasing on December 21, the UK’s Film Distributors Association lists the official release date as December 27. Unofficial numbers for the UK place Sonic 3 higher than Mufasa.
