Simon McQuoid Will Return To Direct The Sequel To 'Mortal Kombat'
With all of the recent debate going on within the film industry about who deserves the most credit for Tom Cruise’s recent billion-dollar success and the return to form of cinemas, many seem to be overlooking Mortal Kombat (2021). Released simultaneously on HBO Max on April 23rd, 2021, the highly anticipated video game movie reboot was met with mixed reviews from both fans and critics. However, with a budget of just 55 million, it made its returns with a worldwide box office total of 83.5 million and is the most streamed new film of 2021 on HBO Max, Mortal Kombat became one of the first cinema success stories since the shut down in March 2020! It was only a matter of time before a sequel was officially announced, and they have finally chosen a director to make it: Simon McQuoid.
With this announcement, it seems obvious that Warner Bros. has faith that Simon will yet again create another hit as he was also the director of the 2021 installment. That being his directorial debut and the film being a success under the circumstances it was up against I’m sure played a big part in their decision to bring him back. Fans seemed to have enjoyed his directing style, while they mention the spotty acting and rushed storytelling, they commended it for its graphic stylized violence and intense fight scenes. Which, let's be honest, that's all you really expect to see if you are watching a Mortal Kombat movie!

As a fan of the game franchise, created by Ed Boon, I found the movie satisfying from an action standpoint myself. I felt like Mcquoid did a good job at making everything look good. The fight scenes were all visible, with not a lot of use of shaky camera, you could actually see and feel the brutality of them. If McQuoid can bring some more of that with a little bit more on the story side of things I think for sure WB will have another hit on their hands. There has been no release date confirmed just that it is expected to be released sometime in 2023. Check back to Culture Slate for the latest on all TV & Film!
