SEGA Announces They Are Creating Film Adaptations Of 'Space Channel 5' And 'Comix Zone'
It appears that Sonic is not the only SEGA property getting the silver screen treatment. SEGA has announced that they will be partnering with Picturestart to produce movie adaptions of the Dreamcast title Space Channel 5 and the Genesis/MegaDrive title Comix Zone. The video game giant shared this announcement on Twitter on August 19th:
SEGA is riding high on the success of the past two Sonic the Hedgehog films, so it is only natural they will want to do the same with their other franchises. Channel 5 will be a comedy/dance adaptation of the 1999 Dreamcast title Space Channel 5 and will tell the story of a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a reporter from the future to save the world from aliens using the power of dance. The film is being written by Barry Battles and Nir Paniry. Battles previously wrote and directed The Baytown Outlaws, a 2012 comedy starring Billy Bob Thorton, and Paniry wrote and directed Extracted, a sci-fi drama that was nominated for the Emerging Visions Award at South by Southwest.
Zone is the Comix Zone adaptation and will follow a jaded comic book creator and a young queer comic book writer of color who must put their differences aside when they are sucked into the final issue of the creator’s popular series to defeat a dangerous supervillain. They will also be exploring the ever-evolving art of storytelling itself in the process. The film will be written by Mae Catt, whose previous credits include the Emmy Award-winning animated series Young Justice, Dragons: The Nine Realms, and Netflix’s Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy.
Both Channel 5 and Zone will be overseen by Royce Reeves-Darby and Erik Feig for Picturestart. On the SEGA side, Toru Nakahara, producer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movies as well as executive producer for the upcoming Sonic Prime TV series, will serve as producer for both projects, while Takumi Yoshinaga will be on the team for Channel 5 and Kagasei Shimomura will join the team for Zone.
