This past week was Geeked Week, an event where Netflix reveals their upcoming works in the geeky fandom realms, like updates on their second season of the live-action One Piece, behind-the-scenes looks at Wednesday season two, and more.

It was also announced through a short teaser trailer that Avatar: The Last Airbender season two is now in production. The trailer takes the camera across some soil, with rocks and pebbles strewn amongst it, and it comes to rest on a pair of feet. Bare feet. On top of those feet are the telltale ankle coverings of the greatest earthbender to ever live: Toph Beifong! We don’t see Toph’s face, but she stomps her left foot, and the ground erupts, and the screen cuts to the logo and the announcement that the second season is now in production.

That’s not all, though. In addition to the trailer, it was also announced who would be playing. That role will go to Miya Cech. She’s appeared in several shows and movies, notably The Darkest Minds, Always Be My Maybe, and Beef. One of the first things to note, however, is that Miya is not blind, though her character is. It’s already led to people on the internet being upset, but in interviews given since the announcement, Miya has noted that she is working with a person who is blind to represent the community. The casting call did encourage people who are blind to audition, but it was not restricted to people with the disability. It’s also worth noting that Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, a blind superhero, is also not blind.

Miya, after the announcement, was excited to talk about the role and how long she’s wanted to play Toph, being a fan of the show and having watched it (like many of us) multiple times.

Season two does not yet have a release date.
