Danny Boyles’s upcoming 28 Years Later, the sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later, and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, has achieved the distinction of becoming the biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones, which in this case was done with several adaptable iPhone 15s (Pro Max). 28 Years Later is not the first film to be shot using iPhones. Arthouse films with smaller budgets and more limited releases such as Sean Baker’s Tangerine (2015) and Steven Sodebergh’s Unsane (2018) were previously filmed using iPhones. However, at 75 million dollars, 28 Years Later is currently the largest movie to date to have been filmed using iPhones. Additionally, 28 Years Later is slated to only be the first in a new trilogy of movies to continue this film’s trend of being filmed with iPhones, so this number is only expected to grow over time.

It was not initially confirmed that the film, which wrapped up filming in August, was shot on iPhones and cast and crew signed NDAs not to disclose this detail. However, a single papparazi photo of the production generated rampant speculation about the use of cameras that appeared to resemble iPhones on the film set. It was later confirmed by people involved in the film to Wired that the film was indeed filmed using adapted iPhones, albeit with iPhone 15s instead of the currently available iPhone 16s (due to their lack of availability at the time of filming).

There are no plot details available for the film yet, but it stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Cillian Murphy, returning to star in another installment of the popular film franchise after having sat out the previous film. The original films deal with a world devastated by a virus known as “Rage” that causes “the infected” to feed on flesh. 28 Years Later is slated for theatrical release in June 2025.
