The current Israel-Gaza situation has led to many public figures making comments perceived as controversial about it, and suffering repercussions to their careers as a result. For instance, actress Susan Sarandon was recently dropped by her Hollywood agency, UTA, after speaking at a pro-Palestinian rally and stating: "There are a lot of people that are afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence." She also said people were "educating themselves, people are stepping away from brainwashing that started when they were kids.”

Actress Melissa Barrera, who was originally slated to appear in the seventh installment of the popular Scream franchise and make her third appearance as “Sam” in the rebooted movie series, has found herself in the same situation due to posting and resharing pro-Palestine Instagram posts that the production company, Spyglass, accused of being antisemitic.

Barerra’s comments accused Israel of "genocide and ethnic cleansing." She later defended her comments by stating: "I believe a group of people are not their leadership and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence and for peaceful coexistence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me."

Before her departure from the latest Scream film was publicly announced, she re-shared a quote from another account on her Instagram story which read: "At the end of the day, I'd rather be excluded for who I include, than be included for who I exclude”, which many fans have since interpreted as a reference to her having been fired from the film. She has also written posts about the Holocaust having been “distorted” to “boost the Israeli arms industry” and saying that Gaza was being treated like a “concentration camp.”

The movie production company Spyglass forcefully and unequivocally responded to Barrera’s comments, as well as others, by stating:

"We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."

Barrera’s referenced Instagram posts that prompted her firing from the latest Scream movie appear to have since been deleted.
