SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP agreed to contracts for members involved in animation last week, averting another Hollywood standoff. The contract is essentially an extension of the three-year deal made in 2020, which passed with over 87% of the vote during the height of the pandemic. SAG-AFTRA called the contract, “a tentative agreement on successor agreements to the 2020 contracts.”

Details of the contracts won’t be made public until after they are read through by SAG-AFTRA leadership in the next few weeks. After review, it will be sent to the guild’s membership for ratification. While the newest contract isn’t available to the public yet the details of the 2020 agreement may hold some clues for those curious about what the 2023 contracts could have in them. For example in 2020 the following were included in the animation deal; Wage increases of 2.5% for the first year and 3% in the following two years, a point percentage increase in contributions to the SAG-AFTRA health plan, and a 26% improvement to residuals for high budget streaming programs.

For now, however, both members and the general public are left guessing until the contract is put to a vote. But given the nature of last year's strikes, and this year's likely IATSE strike, the AMPTP seems to be in no position to show they are unwilling to deal with negotiations. Especially given the solidarity shown by other Hollywood unions last year and the 5$ billion estimated price tag of the strike last year.
