Rosario Dawson Shares Behind The Scenes Look At The Making Of Ahsoka
January 29 was Ahsoka Tano Day. On this day in 2008, the character Ahsoka Tano was announced for then-upcoming animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and was described as the new Padawan learner assigned to Anakin Skywalker. To celebrate essentially thirteen years of the character, actress Rosario Dawson posted a quick video on her Twitter account of the behind-the-scenes work that went into creating the live version of the beloved Togruta for The Mandalorian. Dawson also posted more detailed videos on her Instagram account.
In the obviously sped up video, makeup artists Brian Snipe and Samantha Ward bustled around Dawson, making the 1 hour, 43 minutes, and 25 seconds in the makeup chair looked easy and effortless. Dawson stated that this recorded time does not include hair pin, wig cap, or wardrobe change. Our tireless actress was smiling and cheerfully chatting with the team throughout the entire process.
Many fans tweeted her asking what the pink object in her hand was. She responded that it was a portable fan to circulate the air and keep herself cool, especially with all the glue and spray foundation being used. These layers of makeup would have to last through Ahsoka’s active movements as she wielded the dual lightsabers against the Magistrate and her mercenaries.
To create the iconic markings on Ahsoka’s face, Snipe and Ward used a stencil and an airbrush. And here we thought that we might have to practice freehand drawing the lines for our next cosplay. Some of us will definitely be watching and rewatching the video, perhaps even slowing it down, to study the techniques that we might use in our own cosplay of Ahsoka.
Between makeup application and the never-ending blending, we see smiling Dawson grab a bite to eat, check her phone (DJ-ing for the team, she claimed), and chatting with the team. These candid videos gave us a glimpse into part of the work that goes into producing The Mandalorian. The makeup and costume on the actors, along with practical effects of the scenery, worked together to bring the Star Wars story to life.
In the video of the polished “after” look, Dawson showed off the flawless transformation into the character. It was as if she was born Ahsoka Tano, who had grown up during the Clone Wars, survived the ensuing Jedi purge, and worked from the shadows to support the Rebellion. Recently, she sat in front of us in the flesh as she wordlessly communicated through the Force with the young Grogu.
Dawson also posted an insightful makeup removal video, which includes the removal of the forehead pieces that made the canvas for all the makeup to go on.
“Fun fact...we filled a drawer with leftover forehead pieces...not sure why?! #keepsakes?!”
The video also showed Dawson letting her hair down after all the hard work, revealing her luscious locks hiding beneath the wig cap under the Togruta headtails. After the hot towel, we see her youthful natural skin. At the age of forty-one, how does Dawson maintain her glowing radiant skin? In her interview with Parade in May 2019, she revealed her secret:
“I just make sure to get good rest, meditate, and hydrate. I also don’t drink much alcohol.”
She also swore by a homemade rose water and lavender oil facial spray (made by her friend), and coconut and shea butters.
These candid videos were a joy to watch. With the upcoming Ahsoka series starring Rosario Dawson, we look forward to seeing more from our personable actress.
