Thanks to a decade-long contract, the name Robert Downey Jr. has become synonymous with Iron Man. However, the actor revealed in an interview with the New York Times magazine his most important film performances. Downey Jr. cites The Shaggy Dog as a major turning point in his career. It was his first film after his 1996 drug scandal. The actor was grateful for this second chance from Disney as it brought him back into the ranks of Hollywood. The insurance Downey Jr. would receive from the film was a huge plus.

The second film Downey Jr. mentions in the interview came after his exit from the MCU. Downy Jr. produced the film Dolittle with his wife, Susan. The film was meant to expand into a franchise. Even his Marvel co-star Tom Holland joined the project as Dolitte’s dog and sidekick. But after the film flopped at the box office, Downy Jr. was forced to reevaluate his priorities. He explained, “The stress it put on my missus as she rolled her sleeves up to her armpits to make it even serviceable enough to bring to market was shocking. After that point — what’s that phrase? Never let a good crisis go to waste? — we had this reset of priorities and made some changes in who our closest business advisers were.” Downy Jr. changed gears after what he called a “wound of squandered opportunity” and focused on creating a documentary about his dad called Sr.

The actor admitted that his views are subjective and others may consider these films as mere content that they could pass up. Downey Jr. commented, “It’s a way for me to let myself know that just because this may be the most important thing that I ever commit to a data card on a camera, it doesn’t mean it isn’t [expletive] content to everyone else.” Fans of Robert Downey Jr. can catch the actor’s next performance in Oppenheimer on July 21.
