'Rick and Morty' Creator Justin Roiland Under Investigation For Domestic Abuse

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland has been charged with felony domestic violence in Orange County, California. Filed in May 2020, Roiland pleaded not guilty to the criminal complaint during hearings that year. Reappearing in court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing, Roiland is again on the defence against those same charges.

The criminal complaint, as acquired by NBC News, charges Roiland with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit. Occurring around January 19, 2020, against an anonymous Jane Doe who Roiland had been dating at the time, Orange County Superior Court records state that Roiland had pleaded not guilty to both charges in October 2020.

A protective order filed in October 2020 states that Roiland is not to harass, threaten or surveil the person named within it. He is not to be within 100 feet of that named person, with Roiland having been ordered to turn in all firearms that he owned or possessed. That order lasts until October 2023. Many details of the case are being withheld from public view under a protective order, which includes abuse investigation and medical reports, police body camera footage and reports, as well as recordings of interviews about the case. A date for the full trial has not yet been set, though the pre-trial hearing will reconvene on April 27.

Justin Roiland co-created one of the most popular adult television comedies in Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty with Dan Harmon.  The series has become a billion-dollar media and merchandising franchise since first being aired in 2013. Roiland also voices the two main characters, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. He also co-created Solar Opposites with Mike McMahan, which premiered on Hulu in 2020. Most recently, he developed the video game High On Life through his studio Squanch Games in 2022, with it becoming the top-selling game on Steam.
