Rian Johnson Talks About His Next Step In Benoit Blanc's Story
Since the release of the first film in 2019, the hit Knives Out series has gained audience and critical acclaim, with box office receipts to match. Though it was robbed of more Oscar nominations and wins, the first film was widely seen as one of the best films of the year. Netflix bought the right to the series to produce two more films, both starring Daniel Craig as the detective Benoit Blanc. The first sequel, Glass Onion, came out in 2022 to further critical acclaim, though not as much as the first.
Now that the second film has come out, there are naturally questions on what the third film will look like. Glass Onion did not continue the stories of Marta Cabrera and the Thrombeys from the first film, and, certainly, the third film will not continue the story told in Glass Onion. In an interview, director Rian Johnson talked about the direction he wanted to go, saying “I’m starting to work on the third movie now, and that’s also what’s got me creatively jazzed: I don’t have to replicate the last movie at all. The goal is to strike out in a completely new direction tonally and thematically.”

It’s good that Johnson isn’t just trying to remake the first film with a few tweaks. Clones are never as good as the original, and more people will be interested to see a sequel if they know it’s trying something new and not just a copy/paste of the original. It never works.
Knives Out 3 doesn’t have an official release date as of yet, but it is nice to know that we won’t be getting the same things as before.
