Reviews For 'The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum' Doesn't Looks Very Nice, Does They, Precious?
When first announced in 2019, fans were happy to be getting a Lord of the Rings game based solely on Tolkien’s books that focused on Gollum. Set to be a prequel to the books, it was said to give more depth to the character. After a few delays, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has now released, but it leaves something to be desired.
Developer Daedalic Entertainment’s CEO Carsten Fichtelmann talked about the deal with Middle-earth Enterprises when the game was first announced. Stating that “it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-oriented,” the multi-game deal might be scorched within the fires of Mount Doom with reviews now out.

GameSpot’s 2/10 review gets right to the point with its conclusion, saying that “Much like Gollum’s quest for the One Ring, my quest to complete The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was full of endless setbacks, impossible odds, and ever-increasing levels of madness. And, like Gollum, my journey was doomed from the start. So if the developers’ main goal was to really put you in the shoes of such a pitiful, unloveable character faced with constant pain and suffering at every turn, they were at least successful at that.”
Other reviews also point out the many flaws of the game, with Push Square’s review saying that while a game such as this one has potential, Gollum completely misses the mark with “outrageously dated level design, clunky controls, a severe lack of polish, muddy and unimpressive graphics, and a dull story”.
While some reviews say that even Lord of the Rings diehards will struggle to enjoy the game, others praise that the game is a way to enjoy the world of Tolkien in a new way. The review from The One Ring says that while fans of the books “will have a good idea of where the story intends to go immediately,” those that are new “to the fandom might be taken on a nice joy ride” that could even see them digging deeper into the lore thanks to the game.
What could have been the perfect Lord of the Rings game seems to be one to carefully consider. Should Daedelic get the opportunity to create a second game, one would hope improvements will be made.
