A stunning three volume set containing over two hundred never before released poems by the great J.R.R Tolkien has now gone on sale. Tolkien wrote poetry all the way through his life, so the collection ranges from excerpts from his teenage years to well into his golden years. Readers already seen snippets of his verse in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, throughout the four books he snuck in over a hundred of them.  Although Tolkien tried to publish collections when he was alive, he failed to find any takers.

The poems cover war as well as life, loss, faith and friendship. Stylistically, Tolkien’s writing varies from glib limericks to long epics written in the structurally complex English alliterative meter.  On occasion, Tolkien returned to the same piece more than once over his lifetime and reworked it. In these cases, the evolution of the poem is charted in the new collection.

The set also includes commentary from Tolkien scholars Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond who edited the series. The couple collated the works from those held by the Tolkien estate, Tolkien’s son Christopher, as well as texts held by the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Scull and Hammond often pieced together poems from handwritten notes and scraps that were over fifty years old.

Hammond said in a recent interview, “This will show even more Tolkien’s love of language, his love of words.”
