Marvel Studios continues to experience difficulties in bringing Mahershala Ali to the big screen as the MCU’s Blade. Since the film was announced with the actor, the production has encountered hiccup after hiccup; the latest being the ongoing WGA strike. Marvel Studios announced preproduction is now shut down, making the film the first feature project affected by the strike.

Nic Pizzolatto of True Detective fame was only hired a few days before the strike to rework the script. Since the strike started on Tuesday, the productions immediately affected were late-night shows, along with Saturday Night Live. An inside source involved with Marvel’s upcoming projects spoke with The Hollywood Reporter saying, “There’s a billion dollars net in production costs that are exposed because of the strike. That’s certainly a concern.”

When Blade was first announced at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the project experienced many issues beginning with the film’s original director leaving due to creative differences. Yann Demange stepped into the director’s chair, and Michael Starrbury came in to write the script, which Pizzolatto was working to complete. As the strike continues to bring Hollywood to a standstill, Phase Five movies could be affected if the strike continues for longer. However, Marvel Studios has several projects currently in production, such as Captain America: New World Order, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Wonder Man. Deadpool 3 and the Thunderbolts have not started filming but should begin on schedule in London in June.
