Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is about six weeks away from release. On Thursday, Pokémon and Nintendo released a 14-minute trailer that certainly seemed to acknowledge such, revisiting many of the major gameplay concepts with new users and opponents involved It also introduces features previously undiscussed, and even a new Pokémon along the way.

It starts with the treasure hunt and terastalization, revealing that there will be Wild Tera Pokémon, not just through raid battles. They’ll be visible in the overworld, seemingly isolated and glowing orange energy. So it’s not relegated to just raid battles and important trainer battles, which is cool. The wild terastalization only lasts up to a certain damage point, usually in good catching range. It is then revealed that Let’s Go mode allows the Pokémon to pick up items. Destinations can be set on the map. In the Starfall Street story, there are points where the player must defeat a certain amount of Pokémon in a certain amount of time. Auto Battling seems to be encouraged here.

Another trainer walks up to a TM Machine, where TMs, or Technical Machines, can be crafted…repeatedly. While yes, TMs are breakable again, it seems a steady supply is achievable by collecting League Points and certain materials dropped from defeated Pokémon. After facing off against a Titan Klawf with a Tera Grass-type Drifloon, they’re trading their Girafarig away. It gets a strange amount of focus and why soon becomes clear. Girafarig evolves, revealing the brand new Pokémon Farigaraf. It retains the Normal and Psychic typing of its pre-evolution, and has two newly-introduced abilities: Cud Chew, where when a Pokémon with this Ability eats a Berry, it will eat it one more time at the end of the next turn, and Armor Tail, which makes opposing Pokémon unable to use priority moves.

The Sunflora Hide and Seek mission in the Artazon Gym was also showcased, much like the Wooloo herding at the Turffield Gym or the catching mission in Motostoke’s Gym. Player customization is back in even fuller force, and there’s an increase in photography capabilities, including for Trainer Cards. Picnics are in line to be the successor to such features as Pokémon Refresh, and particularly Pokémon Camp, which had Refresh’s grooming capabilities combined with free-roaming Pokémon at leisure, and cooking. While in Camp it was curry, Picnics have sandwiches! And instead of curious Pokémon, it’s Pokémon eggs that roll onto the grounds.

New Tera Raid Battle footage reveals that they are also time-based, but also your Pokémon can always be brought back in the battle as much as necessary (after 5 seconds of recovery), in contrast to Dynamax Raid Battles where the entire team had 4 lives. In addition, cheering is actually useful! “Go all out!” increases Attack and Special Attack, “Hang tough!” ups Defense and Special Defense, and “Heal up!”, well, heals. That’s a big improvement over empty gestures.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet release on Nintendo Switch on November 18, 2022.
