After almost 30 years with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Jim Ryan will be stepping down from his roles as president and chief executive officer. The former will come into effect in October 2023, with the latter happening in March 2024. Hiroki Totoki, current president, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer of Sony Group Corp., will assume the position of Chairman of SIE in October, along with the CEO position on an interim basis starting April 1, 2024.

Ryan first joined the Europe branch of SIE in 1994. Across his many years at the company, he has held many senior positions for both the Europe branch and the main entity of SIE, being made deputy president of SIE in January 2018. In a statement about his retirement, Ryan said, “I’ve relished the opportunity to have a job I love in a very special company, working with great people and incredible partners. But I’ve found it increasingly difficult to reconcile living in Europe and working in North America. I will leave having been privileged to work on products that have touched millions of lives across the world.”

Totoki will help define PlayStation’s future, working with the management team at SIE and Sony Group Corp. Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida to plan the next chapter of the business, including the successor to the CEO position at SIE. Both Yoshida and Totoki have recognised Ryan’s achievements at SIE in statements released with Ryan’s.

Yoshida stated, "Ryan has been an inspirational leader throughout his entire period with us, but never more so than overseeing the launch of PlayStation 5 in the midst of the global COVID pandemic. That extraordinary achievement made by the entire SIE team has been steadily built on and PlayStation 5 is on track to become SIE’s most successful console yet.”

Along with expressing his “heartfelt gratitude” to Ryan for his “achievements and contributions over his 30-year career at Sony,” Totoki stated “I will work with Jim and the senior management team closely to ensure our continued success and further growth. I am also looking forward to creating the exciting future of PlayStation and the game industry together with everyone at SIE and its business partners.”
