Sony PlayStation is dipping its toes back into the handheld game. Well, sort of. Their mysterious Project Q was revealed to be a remote player called the PlayStation Portal. The system has a design that looks like Link fused an 8-inch LCD screen into the middle of a DualSense controller. All the standard controls and features are preset except the light bar. Game testers claim the device is lighter than the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. The Portal is fitted with a 3.5mm audio jack for private listening.

The handheld’s main and only feature is to serve as a second screen for the PlayStation 5. The Portal can play any games installed on the PS5, but cloud streaming and VR games are inaccessible on the system. The Portal works as a single media device but gives you access to your Playstation home screen with all its trophies, apps, and games library. Unlike previous remote play accessories, the Portal will work from anywhere as long as there’s a decent internet connection. So the Portal would be a great option if you’d like to play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on a train ride to NYC. It would also serve you well if you wanted to enjoy your favorite PS5 games while your kids commandeer the TV to watch Bluey.

The Portal is priced at $199.99, which is on the low end for a handheld. However, the system requires a PS5 to work, so those without either system would have to spend an extra $500 to make the Portal work. Sony also revealed a wireless headset and earbuds to go with the system. The Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds can connect to the Portal and PS5 through PlayStation Link or a USB adapter. Both systems can also connect to Bluetooth, letting a player answer a phone call while playing a game. The Pulse Elite headset costs $150 while the Pulse Explore earbuds are priced at $200. Rather than focusing on creating a handheld game device like the PSP or the PS Vita, Sony took a different route and made a system that lets players experience home consoles on the go. It remains to be seen if this was a wise choice on Sony’s part.
