Memorabilia belonging to late Star Wars actor Peter Mayhew was saved from auction after an outcry from fans and Mrs. Mayhew herself. The Star Wars memorabilia was discovered in an attic by an elderly couple who have lived in the late actor’s home for a quarter of a century, who then reached out to Ryedale Auctioneers in England.

Mayhew’s widow, Angie, took to Twitter to express her disappointment, citing the late actor’s mobility issues as to why the items were left behind when they moved out of the house. Items included original call sheets from the filming of A New Hope in England, memos to the cast, signed photos, and a scrapbook. When Angus Ashworth, owner of the auction house, came across the items, he knew that they were authentic and original.

Planned to go up on the auction block on February 17th and 18th, the protests caused a change of heart and the items were instead “donated” to the Peter Mayhew Foundation, where they will be archived into the collection.

Mayhew, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 74, used a wheelchair in his later years due to his staggering height of 7 feet, 3 inches. He was best known for his role as Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, reprising his role in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith and 2015’s The Force Awakens, before passing the mantel to Joonas Suotamo.
