'Oppenheimer' Set To Become Highest-Grossing Movie Without The Top Spot At Domestic Box Office
Oppenheimer had some serious competition upon release, making the climb to the top of the box office a bit more difficult. Barbie being released alongside the film was helpful for promotion, however, making the scenario a double-edged sword. Thanks to this competition, the film hit a special milestone record, cementing it as the highest-grossing film to never hit the top box office spot in the U.S.
The previous record was set by the animated musical Sing (2016), which grossed just over $270 million domestically and $662 million worldwide while facing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story upon release. Oppenheimer is currently sitting at a domestic revenue of $277.6 million and $662.4 million worldwide at the time of writing this.

In terms of meeting this achievement on the worldwide stage, Oppenheimer still has a ways to go. To take the top spot, the film would need a worldwide gross revenue of a bit over $900 million; this would push it past the Chinese war film The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021). Therefore, the film would need to make about $240 million more overall.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a biographical drama centered around the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. It shows the highlights of the titular character’s life, ranging from his educational studies to his involvement with the Manhattan Project, to the outcome of his 1954 security hearing. The film was based on American Prometheus (2005), the biography of Oppenheimer written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The film is saddled with a 100-day exclusive theatrical run, putting a digital release around October, though a specific day has yet to be confirmed. As Oppenheimer is a Universal Pictures project, it will likely be streamable on Peacock and eventually Amazon Prime; a specific release date has not been specified.
