Olivia Colman Pranked Paul Rudd Live On BBC Radio Show While He Was Promoting ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania’
During his promotion of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on BBC Radio 1, prank expert Paul Rudd fell for a prank aimed his way by long-time friend Olivia Colman.
For those not aware, Rudd would occasionally star on Conan O’Brien’s talk show when in promotion for a new film. Every time, Rudd would talk up this new film and assure O’Brien the clip he’s brought would show why. And every time the same clip from 1988 film Mac and Me would play. No matter how many times the prank was pulled, O’Brien would be convinced that this time, the clip would be for real. Even after O’Brien’s show ended and he started a podcast, Rudd appeared on it to continue the long-running prank.

And now he’s been on the receiving end of one. While on BBC Radio 1 during his Agony Ant-Man feature, Rudd’s long-time friend Olivia Rudd was listening. Emailing host Greg James, she set the prank into motion. Posing as the final caller, she asked in her best Welsh accent what Rudd would do if a friend had come to the country she lived in and not told her about it. She was very specific about it, too.
“I’m a huge fan. I wanted to pick your brains, so what would you do if you had a really good mate. Like, you know, for over 20 years. You’ve known each other almost half your lives. And then, this friend, he doesn’t live in England but he’s come to England and he hasn’t told you about it. And then, not only has he not told you about it, he’s come on to a radio show. What would you do?”
Rudd could sense that he’d been played. After Colman added, “Would you be offended?” Rudd finally managed a response. “Personally, if it’s me, absolutely not. I tend to give everybody the benefit of the doubt. Oh god, what have I done?”
With Colman unmasked, the two friends reflected on their friendship, which had started when they starred in a play together. In a south London flat, Rudd would stay with Olivia, sleeping on the floor and sharing Sunday lunch together. “Olivia and I really hit it off and have remained friends this entire time,” Rudd reflected. “I’m just crazy about you … and I really am sorry for not letting you know I was coming to town.”
