Disney+ Twitter Shares List Of New And ‘Enchanting’ Original Releases

Today marks the second birthday of Disney+. In just two years the streaming service has gained more than 118 million subscribers worldwide and the company expects to expand this number to 230- 260 million subscribers by 2024. To celebrate this birthday, the company has announced an onslaught of new series and made-for-TV movies to be released in 2022 and beyond with most of them being from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

What follows is just a brief list of the highlights based on the tweets that were sent out from the Disney+ account today. More details on the respective shows and movies will be given in separate articles in the coming days.

Marvel (Live-action)

Secret Invasion

The six-episode miniseries will focus on the shapeshifting Skrulls, an alien race that was introduced into the MCU in Captain Marvel and has now conquered earth. The series will also see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelson as Talos, the leader of the Skrulls. Secret Invasion will be released in 2022.

Agatha: House of Harkness

It should come as no surprise that Agatha Harkness, the (evil) witch from WandaVision and a fan favorite right from the start will get her own spin-off television show. Kathryn Hahn will reprise her role as the titular character.

Ironheart

The announcement of this series, which has no official release date yet, came as a bit of surprise. The series will star Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a clever inventor, who creates a special armor by reverse-engineering some of Iron Man’s suits. Thorne will have her MCU debut in the second Black Panther movie.

Echo

A spin-off of the soon to be released Hawkeye series, Echo will feature Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. Production is said to begin in early 2022 with a possible release date in late 2022 or early 2023.

Ms. Marvel

This new original series follows the young outsider Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City, who likes to draw, paint and write fan-fiction and is a big fan of the Avengers and Captain Marvel in particular. The young woman struggles to find her place in life until she suddenly gets her own superpowers. Ms. Marvel will debut on Disney+ in summer of 2022.

She-Hulk

Tatiana Maslany will take on the role of Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who specializes in superhuman oriented legal cases. However, one should absolutely avoid making her angry as she might turn green. The series will include Mark Ruffalo as the “classic” Hulk and Tim Roth as The Abomination. Release date is sometimes in 2022.

Moon Knight

Oscar Isaac will star as Marc Spector, a former CIA agent who was almost killed by a terrorist and saved by a Moon God named Khonshu. However, Spector has other problems as there are four personalities residing inside his head, sometimes working together and sometimes fighting for control. Moon Knight will also premiere in 2022

Marvel (Animated)

Marvel Zombies

This new animated series based on the long running comic book series will present the undead versions of famous Marvel superheroes and supervillains. This is kind of a spin-off of the zombie episode from the first season of What if…? Also coming in 2022.

I Am Groot

Again, it is no big surprise is that Disney’s second cutest character (after Grogu) will get his own animated series on Disney+. Luckily the series will show the adventures of baby and not grumpy teenage Groot. Vin Diesel has recently teased a return to Planet X, Groot’s home-planet, and so it seems likely that he will once again lend his voice to the cute alien without having to learn too many lines.

Spider-Man: Freshman-Year

This animated series that serves as a kind of prequel to the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man movies will show Peter Parker’s way of becoming the red and blue superhero. It will be in the visual style of the early Spider-Man comics and is also set as “coning soon”.

What if…?, Season 2

After the success of the first season, it will come as no surprise that the Watcher will take the audience back to the multiverse, to explore new worlds and new twists to famous MCU stories.

X-Men ‘97

A travel back to the 90s timeline of the X-Men, including the look of the superheroes from 30 years ago. Coming in 2023.

Lucasfilm

Unfortunately, there were not many announcements from Lucasfilm. Disney+ Day brings the release of a new behind-the-scenes documentary called Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett that shines some light on the origin of the famous bounty hunter, who will return in The Book of Boba Fett on December 29.

Warwick Davis introduced the cast of Willow, a follow-up series to the classic Ron Howard movie from the 80s. Joining Davis as the titular dwarf will be Erin Kellyman, who had worked with him before in Solo. Willow is set to premiere in 2022.

Ewan McGregor and director Deborah Chow showed some behind the scenes footage and presented some concept art for Obi-Wan Kenobi, including at least one Inquisitor, Darth Vader in his castle on Mustafar, and the duel between the Dark Lord with his former master.

Other Announcements

Disney did announce quite a few additional projects, both live-action and animated, primarily focusing on a younger audience, like a Cars and a Zootopia series, a Disenchanted movie, a live-action Pinocchio movie with Tom Hanks, and a series based on the Spiderwick Chronicles books, and part 2 of Hocus Pocus again with Bette Midler.

All in all, it will be a busy 2022 on Disney+, especially for Marvel fans. For those who are not satisfied with what was announced today (especially the Star Wars fans), Destination D23 is just around the corner on November 19- 21. The House of Mouse is surely going to make even more announcements and provide more sneak peeks on and beyond the small screen.
