'Star Wars' Reveals New Details About Tatooine's History And Famous Locations

Tatooine is possibly the most iconic planet in all of Star Wars history. It was the first planet introduced to fans in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope back in 1977 where R2-D2 and C-3PO are sent on a mission to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, Leia’s only hope, and also manage to run into Luke Skywalker. Since then, Tatooine has been a popular planet that has shown up in almost every film and television series since. In 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie, Anakin Skywalker returns to the desert planet to reunite Jabba with his son who has been kidnapped by Dooku and his assassin Ventress. More recently, Tatooine is almost the only planet shown in The Book of Boba Fett where Boba Fett replaces Jabba and Bib Fortuna as the lead crime boss in Mos Eisley. Fans are excited to see its return once again in the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series set to premiere on May 25, 2022. It should come as no surprise that Star Wars has announced a new book titled Star Wars: Exploring Tatooine, which will hit the shelves in August 2022.

Star Wars: Exploring Tatooine aims to give fans a visual guide to everyone’s favorite desert planet. The Tatooine guidebook will feature maps and diagrams of the entire planet’s landscape and provide landmark locations that fans will recognize throughout the franchise’s history. It promises to showcase events from everyone’s favorite movies and television shows. With Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope being the film that kickstarted the whole franchise, it is no surprise that it would be featured on the book’s cover. It shows Luke Skywalker outside his home on Tatooine with R2-D2 and Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer above, sending out a group of TIE fighters to fire on the Millenium Falcon. Fans get a taste of the art illustrated within the book right of the bat.

Author Riley Silverman talked about the joy of taking “a nice trip down memory lane” through Star Wars’ history and also described it as “a fun primer” for all of the new fans joining the Star Wars fandom:

“Getting to go on my own little adventure through the tales of Tatooine was amazing. Making my way across the various sprawling landscapes and starting to place familiar characters like Luke Skywalker alongside new favorites like Doctor Aphra, and seeing them come to life through the playful art just really gave me a deeper appreciation for the place this unassuming desert planet has in the grander Star Wars story. I think the book serves as a nice trip down memory lane for long-time fans and as a fun primer for those just taking their first steps.”

The book provides an in-depth look into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home on Tatooine as he lives as Ben Kenobi while watching over Luke Skywalker. It gives more details about Luke Skywalker’s fight with Boba Fett above the Sarlacc pit in Return of the Jedi. More recent characters such as Ahsoka Tano will make an appearance in the book in the section about her battles from Star Wars: The Clone Wars along with Din Djarin and Cad Bane from The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

From Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope all the way to The Book of Boba Fett, if a character stepped on Tatooine, then chances are they will be in Star Wars: Exploring Tatooine. This book promises to be an absolute delight for anyone who loves the desert planet of Tatooine. Be sure to grab a copy when the book releases in August 2022.
