Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Reportedly Adding New Cinematographer From 'Uncharted'
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most popular characters in all of Star Wars. First portrayed by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy, the character later found new life with Ewan McGregor portraying a younger version of the wise and snarky Jedi in the prequel trilogy. This portrayal has become so iconic, spawning lots of means that have been the pinnacle of jokes among Star Wars fandom. For years, people have been wanting Ewan McGregor to return for a story set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, effectively bridging the two trilogies. Such a project was officially confirmed at D23 back in 2019, much to the delight of many fans. McGregor says that he felt that there was always a story to tell with the character set within the gap between the trilogies, and we will be getting a Disney+ series set around the halfway point between the two trilogies.
Lately, we have been hearing more tidbits about theObi-Wan Kenobi series that is coming to Disney+. Ewan McGregor set the record straight earlier this week about how filming has not yet started, and how it will take place late spring in Los Angeles, as opposed to the previously reported Boston, Massachusetts and Boston, England. He is very excited to be working with director Deborah Chow, who has directed a couple of very well-received episodes ofThe Mandalorian season 1. They are even utilizing some of the same technology, such as The Volume. Ewan McGregor is excited to work on the show in this manner, having come a long way from the blue screen and green screen environments of the prequel trilogy.
Now, it seems that we may know of a certain cinematographer working on the series. At least, that is what reports are saying. According to the South Korean website Cine21, the team behind the Disney+ series will include Chung Chung-hoon. For those unfamiliar with him, his credits include the upcoming film adaptation of the Uncharted video game, which was previously set to be released in March of this year before eventually being pushed back to February 2022. This will star Spider-Man star himself Tom Holland. In the past, the cinematographer has also worked on Hotel Artemis, It, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, among other projects. He has quite a full portfolio, of course showing that he has a lot of experience. Among his achievements are the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Cinematography for The Handmaiden.
What all of this means for the overall look of the show, I cannot really guess. But it is just nice to hear that the wheels are still in motion, and that Disney and Lucasfilm are pulling in a lot of talent for projects such as this one. Hopes are pretty high (ground) for this series, so one has to imagine that the production team is trying to handle it with the best care that they can. We will be able to judge the end result once we are able to see the complete miniseries, which is currently expected to be released on Disney+ in 2022. It may seem like a long way away, but it will be here before we know it. In the meantime, we have plenty of new Star Wars content to hold us over as we wait, such as The Bad Batch animated series that will be released sometime this year, and The Book of Boba Fett TV show set to premiere in December.
