New Release Notes For 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Series Reveal Interesting Details
The return of live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi on the (this time, TV) screen has long been anticipated. Ever since the spectacular release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, fans have looked forward to a project that sees the return of Ewan McGregor in the role of the wise Jedi Master. With the confirmed Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi show set to be released on the Disney+ streaming platform, new details about its content have surfaced with the release of a new synopsis of the show.
The official production list of the show contained a project summary as follows:
"Tatooine-a harsh desert world where farmers toil in the heat of two suns while trying to protect themselves and their loved ones from the marauding Tusken Raiders. A backwater planet on the edge of civilized space. And an unlikely place to find a Jedi Master in hiding, or an orphaned infant boy on whose tiny shoulders rests the future of a galaxy."
While the characters listed in the summary are not novel to fans (in fact, being among the first set of characters being introduced into the Star Wars universe), the excitement brought by the description lies in the possible appearance of Luke Skywalker as a child - way before his early adult days in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, as a farmboy living at a moisture farm, yet to explore the galaxy. After all, no "Old Ben" Kenobi storyline would be complete without the inclusion of the young Skywalker. The show may connect nicely, at least thematically, with what we saw of Obi-Wan in Star Wars Rebels season 3 episode 20, "Twin Suns," in which Old Ben was seen watching the young Luke Skywalker from a distance in front of the binary sunset.
According to the production notes on ProductionList.com, the show is set to begin shooting on 1 March 2021 in Boston, England and London, England. However, we know thanks to recent comments by Ewan McGregor to Eddie Izzard that the show is actually filming in Los Angeles late spring. The page on ProductionList.com was last updated on January 25, 2021, and it seems that some of the information is based on reports and announcements. So the page definitely needs to be updated.
The cast and crew list on there reiterates that the show is to be directed by Deborah Chow, with Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward, and John Swartz as producers and Kate Hazell as line producer. Interestingly, Ewan McGregor was the only one listed as a cast member. Such list is by no means conclusive and total, however, as Hayden Christensen - the actor playing fallen Jedi Anakin Skywalker and menacing Darth Vader in the prequel trilogy - is also set to make a return to face off his old master in the series.
While no official information as to the release date of the series has been announced yet, one could draw reference from the information available on other Star Wars TV series to extrapolate the approximate release of the show. With season 3 of The Mandalorian reportedly set to commence shooting on April 5, 2021 and be released in 2022, and The Book of Boba Fett set to premiere in December 2021 after the series' announcement in the post-credit scene of The Mandalorian season 2 finale back in December last year, it is safe to say that Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will probably air sometime in 2022.
