Disney+ while being just weeks away from raising prices and cracking down on password sharing decided to permanently remove some shows and movies. The major nine were Genius: MLK/X, a drama about Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, the coming-of-age series Saturdays, another Disney Channel original series Pretty Freekin’ Scary, National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna and Narco Wars, Locked Up: Abroad, A Small Light which focused on Jewish people hiding during World War II, the animated series Hailey’s On It, and America’s Funniest Home Videos: Animal Edition. Disney also decided to remove Togo, a story of a dogsled champion delivering medicine across the arctic wilderness in Alaska.

Naturally, viewers who enjoyed these shows complained when they discovered they no longer had access to them. A spokesperson for Disney responded to the criticisms, “Like all media companies, we regularly review our titles and make assessments and content decisions based on what makes the most sense for the business. Collectively, it is less than 2% of our total titles globally. Fans still have unprecedented access to a wide variety of Disney’s film and television entertainment.” The company made similar choices to remove some content in 2023 when it deleted Willow, Marvel’s Runaways, and Big Shot, but removing content and raising prices in the same two-week period may not bode well for their subscriber count. The programs removed from Disney+ were also removed from associated streaming platforms Hulu and National Geographic’s website.
