New Games From The World Of J.R.R Tolkien Are Coming
Gamers and Tolkien fans have new content to look forward to. Not only is there confirmation of a new movie for 2026 and a return for The Rings of Power later this year, but new video games centered around the IP are coming as well! In an interview with VentureBeat, Embracer Freemode CEO Lee Guinchard spoke about the future of The Lord of the Rings-based video games. Embracer Freemode is the operating group that Middle-earth Enterprises is under pre-restructuring.
Specific details are being kept intentionally under wraps, as Guinchard explained, “I’m very confident that this will be something quite special from a product perspective again. But it doesn’t do us any favors to come out and say a load of stuff to get [attention]. It has to get to a point where you’ve actually got something to say in an execution sense.”

Guinchard touched on the IP’s universe and what stories there are to be told: “I think Tolkien has already set the stage for Middle-earth, and all the tales and all the beginnings, the tribulations, the drama. They’re all set up in a fully fleshed-out world.” He continued, touching on the passion for upcoming games, “The interesting thing is how we go and tell the story in the future for these new media like video games and all of this new technology for how people immerse themselves in worlds. That’s where I’m super interested.”
This is not something Guinchard is looking to rush. He reaffirmed, “I think the idea of having games come out on a regular business is great, but you’ve got to put the work in.” He also highlighted the importance of company-creator relationships, “For this property and how we set it up for the future, we’ve got to acknowledge and support creators first. All I can say through all of this is you have to respect the works…it’s important to build those relationships in order to really take this thing into the next chapter. Historically, it’s just been so fragmented.”
While fans wait for future game updates, there is plenty of LOTR content to look forward to now. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns for a second season in August 2024. A new movie, directed by Andy Serkis, is coming in 2026. The upcoming film-based game Tales of the Shire has a release window of 2024.
