New Ed Sheeran-Backed Trailer For ‘Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’ Teases New Donphan Forms; First Tera Raid Battle Events Announced And More

It was another day for a 9 AM Eastern Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer release, presumably the last with as little as nine days until the games are finally out. And no it did not turn out to be the complete Gimmighoul report. Set to “Celestial” by Ed Sheeran, which will also be in the games, much of it felt like a recap of what had already been revealed. That included featuring every Pokémon revealed in the marketing to this point. Even Girafarig evolved into Farigiraf again. At least there were new shots of different Terastalized Pokémon, like Scizor with a Fire Tera Type, or Normal Tera Type Gengar. However, there was still something new to be found even before getting to the website for more details.
While it had long rumbled in leaks, the trailer finally confirmed past and future-based forms of Pokémon, which are seemingly version-exclusive to Scarlet and Violet respectively. Their presences are chronicled in journals called the Scarlet Book and Violet Book respectively. In them, the Donphan forms are codenamed Great Tusk and Iron Treads. Great Tusk is sad to have killed an expedition team member, and when Iron Treads curls its body and rolls to attack, it leaves a trail dug into the ground as if it had scorched the earth.

The first Tera Raid Battle Event will be the Eevee Spotlight, running from Thursday, November 24 at 4 PM, to Sunday, November 27, 2022, at 3:59 PM. Eevee will be appearing more frequently in Tera Raid Battles, given various Tera Types to presumably show off as much as possible. Like the Dynamax wells in Galar, tall Tera Raid crystal formations in Paldea will be where Tera Raids occur. The black crystal formations will have stronger Pokémon from which to reap greater rewards. Charizard with the Mightiest Mark will be appearing there for two stints December 1-4 and December 15–18 with Dragon as its Tera Type.

The website says Charizard can’t normally be encountered in Paldea, so either Charizard isn’t catchable in the wild or used by other NPCs. More broadly and likely, the entire Charmander line is in Paldea’s group of Pokémon that aren’t in any of the game’s Pokédexes but still transferrable, like that small group in Sword and Shield that wasn’t in the Isle of Armor or Crown Tundra Pokédexes.
The games will be getting a day 1 patch to allow for online play. Ranked Battles will be available starting in December, and Online Competitions are slated for release in spring 2023. Around that time, Pokémon Home compatibility will also be made available, as will an update to that title’s Battle Data feature. It was also revealed that with save data from previous titles the player can get special Rotom Phone cases. The Let’s Go case depicts a battle between Pikachu and Eevee in depictions based on their Yellow version sprites, Sword and Shield’s is inspired by Ball Guy, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s by the Poketch, and Legends: Arceus’s by the Arc-Phone.
