Netflix has released a new trailer for the platform’s upcoming dark fantasy anime series, Castlevania: Nocturne. The setting is France during the French Revolution. With humanity distracted by the war, the sinister vampires lurk in the shadows plotting to destroy Earth’s sun. Humanity’s survival is dependent on a young man, named Richter Belmont. He comes from a long line of vampire hunters. The trailer opens with a vampire talking to Richter Belmont when he was a child. He tells the boy that his mother once killed something that he loved and threatens Richter that he will experience the same fate at his hand– “one day.”

The scene fades out and opens anew with a tree, with green leaves glowing under sunlight. Beneath it sits an emerald-eyed girl practicing levitation with stones at her feet. We then see Richter as a presumable young man. He runs through the forest to a body of water. A voice talks over the moonlit scene acknowledging the grief and loss that Richter is feeling. The voice briefly discusses the revolution as someone faces execution by guillotine. Viewers then catch a glimpse of a woman with glowing fuchsia orbs. The voice tells young Richter that a “vampire messiah” will come. She describes her as the “devourer of light.” Her goals will include crushing the revolution, but it won’t end there. A girl begins to speak. She tells us that she will ground bone to dust and drain the earth of all its blood.

The scene breaks into several quick shots of sword battles before cutting back to stones levitating as an eclipse begins to fill the screen. We see a possible animal shifter followed by a vampiric ghost. Swords, fangs, tears, lightning power, fire, strength, and darkness flash near the final seconds of the trailer. All of this with the irresistibly emotion-provoking vocals of a woman singing as a creature with a pink-tinged tail soars toward an eclipsing sun. A male voice speaks one last time to Richter, telling him he is praying for him.

Castlevania: Nocturne will premiere only on Netflix on September 28.  Until then, check out the trailer below!
