Netflix has been in the news quite a bit lately. Most recently, the streaming platform is axing one of its cheaper, ad-free tiers. The Basic tier without ads, which was $10 plus tax per month, has been removed from U.S. and U.K. markets. This tier was first axed in Canada.  Members who already had this subscription will keep it for ten dollars a month until they change or cancel their subscription.

The plans page on Netflix’s website confirms this under the notes of the table, stating, “The Basic plan is no longer available for new or rejoining members. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account.” Removing the Basic tier pushes customers towards the next cheapest option, Standard with ads, which was launched late last year under a different name.

The removal leaves three tier options for consumers. The cheapest is Standard with ads, which allows up to two devices at once to watch a majority of the content on the platform; it is supported by regular ads, similar to cable for $6.99 a month. The next subscription option is Standard, an ad-free option that gives the consumer unlimited content access to the content on Netflix for $15.49 per month. This option lets up to two devices download and use it at once and lets one person who doesn’t live with you join the account; additional device slots can be purchased for $7.99 per month each.

The final tier option is Premium, costing $19.99 per month. This plan is ad-free, allows four devices to stream at once, lets two non-household residents join, allows six devices to download at once, and gives access to Spatial Audio. It also lets additional slots be purchased for $7.99 each. All of these Netflix subscription plans are subject to taxes and fees.
