Multiple 'Popeye' Slasher Films Are In The Works

Anybody who has paid even a little bit of attention to the past few years in horror has spotted the trend of taking childhood characters and turning them into brutal killers. Steamboat Willie, Peter Pan, Bambi, Winnie the Pooh, and Gangg the list goes on, and it’s only going to grow as films see modest successes, regardless of quality. Now we have the latest character to enter that “fine company” in Popeye the Sailor Man. Yep, he’s getting his own slasher film now.

He’s getting three of them.

In 2025, we’re getting Popeye the Slayer Man, Shiver Me Timbers, and Popeye, all centered around everyone’s favorite spinach-eating sailor. Like the Pooh movies, this stems from the fact that Popeye will be hitting public domain on January 1st, 2025, so anybody is free to do anything they’d like with the character after that. At least three people took that to mean, “We can make a slasher movie with him! It worked for Pooh!”

These are just the next in a long list of films we’re getting. On top of the “Twisted Childhood Universe”, we’re also seeing three more Mickey Mouse slasher films, a Piglet slasher film, and more is certain to come after that. Should we expect much quality from the upcoming Popeye films?

Well, why should we start now?

Although I am disappointed that none of them take place in an old, abandoned Popeyes chicken restaurant. Oh well. Maybe someday.
