Michael Ouweleen Shares Details About The Futures Of Cartoon Network And Adult Swim
Michael Ouweleen, president of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, described an interesting morning where he read an obituary of the networks. After the Warner Bros. merger, viewers were convinced that the network was dead or dying. Ouweleen insists that the companies are alive and well despite the rumors.
The president invoked the success of Batwheels, which was the most-watched series among boys 2-5. It has been renewed for a second season. Unexpectedly, the series also performed well with adults. Ouweleen wants the company to lean into that demographic, or psychographic, as the director puts it. Instead of focusing on a particular age group, the company plans to create an animation that can appeal to all ages.

Ouweleen praises the success of Rick and Morty for bringing animation back to the forefront. He believes many dismissed it as small or kids only, but the median age through the day is 29. Kids and adults alike can look forward to the impressive slate of animated shows to be released in the coming years. Among them are Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, My Adventures With Superman, The Heroic Quest of Prince Ivandoe, and Iyanu: Child of Wonder. It is still being determined if the group of projects dropped by HBO Max headlined by Batman: Caped Crusader still has a linear home on Cartoon Network.
The network also reiterated its slate of Bugs Bunny Builders, Sesame Street Mecha Builders, and the new Craig of the Creek seasons. Summer Camp Island, Jellystone! and Teen Titans Go. Adult Swim will see the release of Metalocalypse, Venture Bros., and Rick and Morty: The Anime among new seasons of Rick and Morty, YOLO: Silver Destiny, The Eric Andre Show, Teenage Euthanasia, FLCL: Grunge, and FLCL: Showcase. This expansive list shows a network that is neither dying nor on its last legs.
