The various Marvel Studios TV series that have landed on Disney+ across the last few years might be among the most watched TV content on the platform, but there’s an issue behind the scenes. The production of these series has been with the mindset of making movies, hence their more limited-run nature. With Daredevil: Born Again production paused in June during the writer's strike, the footage that had been produced was reviewed by Marvel executives. They assessed that things needed to change. And not just with that series.

Marvel Studios has been a movie-focused production since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, so when it came to producing TV series for Disney+, things stayed the same. Showrunners were never hired, with movie executives calling the shots on those series. To fix what wasn’t working, post-production and reshoots were relied on. And rather than commission pilot episodes to see if a series could work in its current design, full $150 million-plus series were produced with no such testing.

While that method worked for the first few years, recently there has been a drop in critical and audience reception. As such, Marvel Studios is shifting strategy so that their TV series can be TV-focused with production. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, said of the changes “We’re trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture. It comes down to ‘How can we tell stories in television that honour what’s so great about the source material?’”

Showrunners will be hired, creating show bibles and writing the pilot episode of a series. The showrunners and television executives will help the Marvel Studios’ series stay focused on a TV design philosophy. That also includes stepping away from limited-run series, instead opting for more traditional serialised, multi-season runs. The idea is to make the audience invested in the characters of a series, rather than just seeing them as setup for crossover material with the movies. The characters of the TV series should be as loved as those of the movies. These changes will perhaps make sure that can happen.
