Marvel has launched a new IP known as Marvel Spotlight.  It appears as if the studios are following the comics and introducing levels of canon for the phases. The idea behind Marvel Spotlight is that the stories will require less buy-in and less knowledge of previous content. An easy-to-watch format could be great for introducing new fans to the huge Marvel Universe.  But it might also be difficult to get invested in short one-shot shows from characters that don’t already have a big following.

Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum said the purpose of Marvel Spotlight was as follows:

‘Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity’

RELATED:

Echo, the Hawkeye spin-off, has already been assigned to the Marvel Spotlight brand. Echo is due to stream on Hulu and Disney Plus on January 10th, 2024. It’ll be interesting to see what other projects come out under the new banner. The only other series in development at the moment are Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Ironheart, both of which are supposed to be in step with the films. It’ll be interesting to see if either of them becomes a Spotlight project.
