Mark Hamill's Surprise Guest Appearance At San Diego Comic-Con
Pop culture enthusiasts, actors, and cosplayers come together at San Diego Comic-Con each year to share stories, create new memories, spend money on precious memorabilia, and meet their idols in person. While Hamill's appearance at this year’s Comic-Con is nothing new, his surprise comes from how he will appear to fans. Hamill’s latest addition to his résumé will be as the “fan-favorite character” The Flying Dutchman in the upcoming film The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for SquarePants.
Sitting among the well-known SpongeBob alums—Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton)—the cast amazed the audience with a live reading of the series pilot Help Wanted. However, Hamill’s guest appearance “stole the show” with his announcement of voicing “the most fearsome goofball pirate you’ve ever seen”. The Flying Dutchman, voiced by Brian Doyle-Murray in the SpongeBob series, will most likely carry his grudge against SpongeBob for mocking him one fateful Halloween night in 1999. Nonetheless, Hamill has stated to eager fans that his dawning the pirate’s hat and haunted ship is “inspired silliness from start to finish.”

Fans of SpongeBob and Mark Hamill will see this “inspired silliness” on December 19th, 2025. To get a taste of Hamill’s range as an animated villain (outside of the Joker), Hamill can be found as Fire Lord Ozai from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Undergrowth from Danny Phantom, Darth Bane in Clone Wars, Skeletor on Masters of the Universe: Revelation and (a blink and you’ll miss it) The Moth in SpongeBob SquarePants season five’s Night Light among many, many others.
